Marseille sign from afar — image by the Author

Visiting Marseille for the First time

The town of Marseille is just as elegant as it sounds. Founded by the Greeks around 600 B.C., Marseille has been a hub for immigration and trade in southern France. It is the oldest city in France. It also has the largest port for cruise ships, freight, and commerce, making it the most important in the region.

Our visit to Marseille was short but memorable. It was a sunny day with temperatures in the 80s. The clear skies allowed for perfect views of scenic points of interest. The first thing that captured my eyes was the large Marseille sign near the Centre Commercial Marseille Grand Littoral as we arrived at the port. It reminded me of the Hollywood sign. There was no time to visit the site, therefore, we admired it from afar.

Riding the Hop-On Hop-Off Colourbus

One drawback of cruises is that the port stops are short. Therefore, there is not enough time to wander the cities or do much. To make the best out of the time allotted, we opted for a Hop On Hop Off tour bus — the Colorbus Marseille. The Colorbus Marseille took us around the city’s major attractions, such as La Major Cathedral, the Museum, Le Vieux Port, Abbaye Saint-Victor, Marseille Citadel Saint Nicholas Fort, and the Notre Dame Basilica.
